Film Description
| Produced by Salif Keita, this album is a rich mix of traditional acoustic and contemporary electric styles, featuring one of the sweeter voices of the Wassoulou, Fantani Toure. This young singer is a prime example of the next generation from Mali--her gutsy delivery is tempered by a sleeker delivery that sounds less coarse to Euro-American ears. The songs she presents alternate between very traditional sounding songs with a backing of balafon and djembe to more modern, almost R&B-influenced numbers where Keita's production finds a warm mix of acoustic and electric sounds that always keeps the voice up front. A few songs are reminiscent of Keita's heavily synthesized Soro album, but they are still always in service to Toure's wonderful voice. Also notable is some gorgeous guitar work from Lamine Soumano, a name from West Africa to watch out for in the coming years. --Louis Gibson |
