Film Description
| The greatest preoccupation of a teenager's life is probably the pursuit of a mate but, with a little technical intervention, that just got more complicated in Virtual Sexuality. The premise is basically along the lines of 80s cult-classic Weird Science but with a gender reversal, although there's plenty of eye-candy for both sexes. Seventeen-year-old brunette Justine (Laura Fraser) is looking for her ideal man, but there are slim pickings as most of the boys her age have the hots for the voluptuous blonde Hoover (Natasha Bell). Justine enlists the help of stud-in-geek's-clothing Chas (Luke de Lacey) to set up a hot date for her and long-haired lout Alex but, as luck would have it, he stands her up and she embarks on the strangest course of events imaginable. Her much-sought-after "Mr Barcode" comes to life extraordinarily when a gas explosion outside the technology exhibition they're at wreaks havoc on all the machines--including the 3-D virtual reality booth she's in. The realisation of her male alter-ego Jake (Rupert Penry Jones) makes for funny viewing, although wisely the script writers resisted the temptation for smutty jokes just for the sake of it. Wanting to make money from the whole cloning idea, the bad guys who created the machine are after Jake but--thankfully--Chas miraculously develops advanced computer-programming skills and saves the day. Does the hero get the girl? What do you think? --Angela Boodoo |
